Ottawa – Canadians value their postal system and expect it to evolve to meet their changing needs. The reports released today by the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates provide valuable input into that process. They also demonstrate the difficulty in finding common ground when it comes to addressing the significant challenges facing Canada Post.

A strong and reliable postal system is important to Canadians. It connects rural, remote and urban communities, helps charities raise funds and supports the success of Canadian businesses of all sizes. By delivering two out of three parcels Canadians order online, Canada Post is helping Canadians and Canadian businesses to fully participate in the new retail economy. Unfortunately, the growth in parcels will not be enough to avoid future financial losses. To remain viable, major changes to the business are required.

We thank the members of the committee for their contributions to the national discussion on the future of the postal service. Canada Post will continue to fully participate in and support this important process.
